Port Stephens, located about 200 kilometers north of Sydney in New South Wales, is one of those places that feels like a hidden gem. It’s a stunning coastal region, brimming with natural beauty, diverse wildlife, and some of the cleanest beaches I’ve ever seen. Whether you’re in the mood for outdoor adventures or simply want to unwind in a serene setting, Port Stephens has it all. I spent a few days there, and here are some of the top things I did during my visit.

Things To Do:

Tomaree Head summit walk
If you’re visiting Port Stephens, the Tomaree Head Summit Walk is an absolute must. The hike itself is a bit of a challenge but not too difficult, so even if you’re not an experienced hiker, you’ll still find it manageable. As I made my way up, the path winds through bushland, and I could already feel the excitement building with each step. The best part? The views get progressively more breathtaking as you climb higher. When I finally reached the summit, the panoramic view of Port Stephens and its gorgeous beaches was absolutely worth the effort. It was such an incredible feeling to stand at the top and take in the vast landscape below—truly one of those moments that made me appreciate the beauty of nature.

Visit Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary
For anyone who loves animals, the Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary is a must-see. I had the chance to visit this sanctuary, which is dedicated to providing care for sick, injured, and orphaned koalas. It’s a place where you can learn a lot about these iconic Australian animals while observing them in their natural habitat. I loved walking along the Sanctuary Story Walk and visiting the Koala Hospital, where I learned how the sanctuary helps these adorable creatures recover and thrive. The Sanctuary SKYwalk is another highlight, offering an elevated view of the bushland where koalas and other wildlife live. Plus, you can stop by the Koala Centre Kiosk for a drink and snack while taking in the beautiful surroundings. What made the visit even more special was that you can actually stay on-site, immersing yourself fully in the serene bushland environment. It was such a surreal experience, and I left feeling like I had connected with the natural world in a truly meaningful way.

Quad biking on the sand dunes
For something a little more adventurous, I went quad biking on the sand dunes, and it was an absolute blast. The dunes here are the largest coastal sand mass in the Southern Hemisphere, and exploring them on a 400cc quad bike was an exhilarating experience. I didn’t need any prior experience to enjoy it, and the guide made sure to walk me through everything before we set off. The views from the dunes were incredible—wide open beaches, sparkling waters, and the ever-changing landscape. It was one of those activities that gave me a real sense of freedom and excitement, all while being surrounded by the natural beauty of Port Stephens. If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush, this is the activity for you.

Port Stephens is one of those places that checks all the boxes—whether you’re a nature lover, thrill-seeker, or someone just looking to relax and enjoy the beauty of the Australian coast. From breathtaking hikes to unforgettable wildlife encounters and heart-pumping adventures, it’s a destination that has something for everyone. I left feeling recharged and grateful for the opportunity to experience such a magical part of the world.
